Listening Before Writing
There is a moment before a story becomes words.
It may happen while walking, sitting in traffic, speaking with someone, or watching a tree move differently because the wind has changed.
Nothing has been written yet. But something has been noticed.
I used to think writing began when I sat down to write. Increasingly, I think it begins much earlier—with attention.
The page is sometimes only where the listening becomes visible.
